CHAPTER 26

Aunt Julia asked me how many days till Christmas and how the shop was doing.

“We look really good and festive and it’s keeping me hopping. This is the busy season, so we hope to break last year’s record. Main Street becomes so magical at Christmas. I love the hustle and bustle of the shoppers and then of course all the carolers and other Christmas characters that roam the street during th eseason. It’s the place to be doing business in Colebridge during the holidays, that’s for sure.”

Then she said, “We’d all love to know how last night went if you’ll share that with us.”

I blushed inside, hoping it would not show on the outside. “I can’t believe we’ve gone this long without me being interrogated,” I laughed. “I had an amazing time. We went to Mavericks, Aunt Julia. I understand you’ve been there with Uncle Jim?”

“No, I haven’t,” she said. “I’ve just heard good things about it. Jim said he has been there on business. Well, I guess we really don’t know that to be a fact, but I do know it’s very expensive, so I guess Sam wanted to impress you.”

“Well, he did, and I hope he calls me again.”

“I am so pleased with his family values and how he worries about his parents. He’s also close to his one sister. Have you met her?”

“No, I haven’t. You are right, though. He is quite fond of her and feels badly that she has the day-to-day duties of his parents’ care. I must warn you, it is hard to have a relationship with someone who travels like he does.”

“Can he be trusted, Aunt Julia?”

“In what way are you referring?” The room fell silent as though E. F. Hutton had just spoken. Oh, please, let this be an answer I want to hear.

“Well, I just mean do you know him to be faithful with whom he is dating?”

“I just assumed that Sam dated, but he hasn’t brought his dates around Jim and me. I know what you’re thinking, Anne. You’re concerned that he and Jim might have the same practices.”

“Oh, my, I guess I didn’t think what I was saying. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to…”

“You have every right to ask that question,” Aunt Julia stopped my embarrassment. “I think you are smart to do so. I’ll ask Jim more about him.”

“I’m afraid she’s smitten,” said Mother. I blushed and the nassured them all I would be careful.

“Ouch!!” Sue yelped. She had stuck herself with her needle. “Oh no, I’ve got blood on the quilt!”

Mother jumped up to get a cold, wet towel.

“No, wait Sylvia,” Aunt Marie said. “Remember it’s your own saliva that takes out the blood.”

Sue was still bleeding so she grabbed a tissue. We all stood up to see what could be done. Mother came down the stairs with a wet rag, but again was warned to wait till Sue tried her own saliva. “Okay, okay,” she said. “Here I go; I’ll give it a try.”

She tried and tried, dabbing it with her own saliva, before she started to have some luck.
